Six events, performances and exhibits to check out including JUNOfest, Art is Art and Country in the Capital

The 46th annual JUNO Awards take place in Ottawa on Sunday, April 2, but the celebration of Canadian music runs from March 27 to April 2. During JUNO Week in our nation’s capital, visitors and Ottawa residents alike will have plenty of events to keep them entertained in the lead-up to the big event.

The JUNO Photography Exhibition and Art is Art

When: Through April 16

Visit the Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG) Annex at City Hall to view The JUNO Photography Exhibition, a retrospective of more than four decades of Canadian music photography, including shots from the Juno Awards’ 40th-anniversary book as well as never-seen-before imagery by national rock-and-roll photographers. Also at the OAG Annex during these dates, the Art is Art exhibition will showcase visual works such as paintings and sketches by Canadian recording artists that include Jann Arden and the late Leonard Cohen.

Country in the Capital

When: Wednesday, March 29, 9:30 p.m.

Stay up late on a school night for your chance to hear some top emerging country music acts from the Ottawa region at House of Targ. Tip: Come early—House of Tarq has pinball machines and delicious perogies, and you’ll want time to try them both before the show.

Cost: $10 cover charge.

India’s Influence on Modern Day Rock ‘n’ Roll

When: Thursday, March 30, 7:30 p.m.

See a performance by Indian dancer and choreographer Anjali Patil at ALE – Amberwood Lounge & Eatery, she will play the traditional tabla (double drum instrument) and perform a kathak (a dynamic dance from northern India). Patil and other performers will play traditional Indian music and she will also lead a discussion on India’s influence of popular music.

Cost: $10 cover charge. Reservations at ALE are recommended.

Rock vs. Jock JUNO Cup

When: Friday, March 31, 7:30 p.m.

Sports enthusiasts and music fans come together at TD Place for this charity hockey game between former NHL players and Canadian musicians in support of MusiCounts, a music education charity. Expect former NHL stars such as Gary Roberts of the Toronto Maple Leafs to face off against rock stars such as Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo.

Junior JUNOS

When: Saturday, April 1, 10 a.m

Part of KIDSFEST Ottawa (the city’s biggest children’s festival), this family-friendly event at the EY Centre features live musical performances by Juno nominees for children’s music, including a sing-along with Splash’N Boots. For the full mini-glamour experience, book a VIP ticket for access to a red carpet entrance, priority seating and photos with a JUNO statuette.

JUNOfest

When: Friday, March 31 and Saturday, April 1

During this two-day music festival, more than 100 local and national artists will perform at more than 15 large and small venues around the city. Take in performances by 35 JUNO nominees including The Strumbellas at The Bronson Centre Theatre on April 1, or discover a new band at spots like Irene’s Pub and Babylon Nightclub.

Cost: $30 wristbands can be purchased here for priority access to all venues both nights. Single-show tickets range between $12 and $22 in advance or at the door and are subject to availability.
